About Connected Geophysical Solutions

Connected Geophysical Solutions is developing geoscience software for oil and gas companies to exploit reservoirs hidden beneath the Earth's surface.

Oil and gas companies rely on faster and more accurate software solutions to lower the risk of exploration and drilling. As existing reservoirs diminish and exploration becomes more difficult, the need for better seismic imaging technologies and management of big data becomes necessary. Today's workflow in seismic imaging typically takes 1 to 6 months, 1,000 to 100,000 CPUs in datacenters, and many human resources. CGS aims to use in-house and cloud-based computer clusters, an interactive modeling process, and a proven technology stack to significantly reduce the time, cost, and human involvement necessary to produce better quality results.

The software provided by CGS will result in significant savings of time and money:
1. CGS Cluster Foundation – Allows end-users to manage high channel count data I/O, execute a seismic imaging algorithm and receive the results in near real-time (15-60 seconds). This is significantly faster than traditional batch processing solutions used today.

2. CGS GeoModel – Enables geoscientists to interactively input a new or modified model, run it over a targeted area, and view results in seconds. The traditional workflow can take months. Near real-time interactivity can allow for a quicker, iterative process that reduces workflow time to as little as 60% of traditional methods and results in significant cost savings.

3. CGS Migration Suite – Allows customers to run their own proprietary algorithm. A default imaging algorithm that is best-suited for this purpose is also provided (Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Depth Migration).

The market for seismic imaging software and services is projected to be $1.3 billion in 2011. Software in this space has traditionally been provided through a software licensing model that is cost-prohibitive to small- and medium-sized oil and gas companies. It has also required large upfront investments to purchase thousands of computers for processing purposes. CGS aims to create a pay-as-you-go model that allows companies of all sizes to use the software. This significantly broadens the market size, increases access to best-in-class tools for all, and increases competitiveness in this space.
